Do you have the small manual of the loco? In German we call it in this special case mostly Waschzettel (if you want to search for it). It describes how to unmount the housing.
Do so and then compare your loco with the pics in the PDF.
Most probably there are only minor differences. There is no general drawback in digitalizing even models from the eighties.
HI Vertato,

if you do'nt have the small manual for this engine, please look here:

Hi!

How experienced are you in soldering decoders?
To convert the old BR17 to DCC is not a big deal and depends on the decoder you choose and how big / thick it is.
How is your german? Can you read or do you use a translation program to write in this language?
After answering these questions don't hesitate to ask for more informations and help will be provided !

Best regards
Mathi

Hi Mathi, unfortunately my german is almost 0:( I'm using online tranlslators

I think I will use DCX74 DCC decoder or similar. it will be not a first loco, I have done many japanese locomotives

Thanks for the help
Hi!

Good to hear from you so it makes it much easier to help you "back on track"!
Here I can provide you a link to german page where the guy converted a BR17 with a DCX74:
http://www.nbf-worms.de/decoder/decoder-einbau_htm_files/MTX_12077.pdf

It is not much of a hell because almost everything happens inside the tender and inside it there is space enough for this tiny decoder. In my 17 does a DZ125 a nice work as well.
You can use the existing two wires from loco to tender as pickup wires. The only difference is the switchable front light. This guy left it untouched so the lights are always on.
I made my lights switchable which requires just one wire (the white one but painted black with a marker pen easily).
If you need more informations please ask, its for free

Best regards
Mathi

Hey, you're living right in the middle of the apple, right!
Hi Mathi

I think use Dz125 too, bcouse here is problem with dcx74, nobody sell it, this weekend I will try to install the decoder. how you do lights?

I'm live in brooklyn, :)
Yes Brooklyn!
Are you customer with Trainworld? The sell great bargains all the time and they have Digitrax decoders.
I blackened the white wire due to unvisibility and soldered it directly to the wire at the bulbs foot. The original wire is obsolete and can be discarded.
Keep an eye on a large loop between tender and loco when you lay and cut the wire to length. Cut to short makes it a heck of trouble when the loco has to go into curves.

Best regards
Mathi
to the trainworld I need 15 min walking :) I love this store :) and I use modelltrainstuff too

Thanks again:)
Same to me when I'm in the US or even orders from here!
But if I would live so close to the source I had to move to avoid bankruptcy or divorcement!
My wife quarrels too :) but sometimes she buy some models for me :)  She love's German steam locos :)
So if you both love german engines I would draw your attention to these very informing sites about digitalisations:
This one is part of this hp: http://www.1zu160.net/digital/einbau.php

Here we have a very good source for diverse manuals and a list of decodered locos either:
http://www.mtkb.de

You click on --Lok-Decoder Einbau--

Don't be confused if they speak of SX-Decoder. This is a very common digital system here in Germany but the install of decoders is simply the same.
Thanks Mathi, very helpful links to me
